Lanseria International Airport (HLA) is proud to announce its attainment of the prestigious Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) – Mapping Level, a significant milestone in its commitment to environmental sustainability and carbon management excellence.

This certification, valid until 30 December 2025, is administered by WSP under the authority of Airports Council International (ACI) Africa.

The ACA Mapping Level recognises Lanseria International Airport’s comprehensive carbon management processes and proactive efforts to measure and address CO2 emissions. This achievement positions HLA as a responsible leader in the global aviation sector’s response to climate change, aligning with international best practices and the growing demand for sustainable aviation infrastructure.

This accreditation marks a pivotal moment in Lanseria International Airport’s transformative journey to becoming Africa’s smartest airport. The airport’s vision is anchored in innovation, environmental stewardship, and operational efficiency, with a commitment to leveraging smart technologies and sustainable practices to exceed the expectations of modern aviation stakeholders.

The ACA programme, the aviation sector’s most authoritative carbon management certification system, provides a structured framework for airports to measure, manage, and reduce their carbon footprint. By achieving the Mapping Level, HLA has established a scientific baseline for its carbon emissions, a critical first step in its long-term decarbonisation strategy.

Lanseria International Airport’s achievement reflects the dedication of its team, whose unwavering focus on sustainability continues to drive meaningful environmental impact. The airport has already implemented several initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, including energy-efficient retrofitting projects and the exploration of renewable energy sources.

As part of its broader sustainability strategy, HLA is also investing in infrastructure upgrades, such as the development of a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility and a world-class cargo precinct. These projects not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute to the airport’s goal of becoming a regional and global aviation hub.

The airport’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its operations. The airport is actively engaging with stakeholders across the aviation ecosystem, to foster a collaborative approach to carbon reduction. This aligns with the ACA programme’s emphasis on stakeholder partnerships and the integration of sustainable practices across the value chain.

Looking ahead, HLA remains resolute in its pursuit of operational excellence, smart growth, and a greener future for South African and African aviation. The airport’s strategic focus on sustainability not only enhances its reputation as an environmental leader but also ensures its resilience in the face of evolving regulatory and market demands.

The achievement of the ACA Mapping Level is a testament to Lanseria International Airport’s dedication to environmental sustainability and its role as a pioneer in the African aviation sector. As HLA continues its journey towards achieving higher levels of carbon accreditation, it sets a benchmark for other airports in the region, demonstrating that sustainability and operational excellence can go hand in hand.
